Medicare Part A & B (sometimes called Original Medicare) pays 80% of costs for hospital and doctor expenses. But you have to pay the 20% no matter how high that cost may be.
Medicare Advantage (sometimes called Part C) is run by private insurance, but always has a Maximum Out of Pocket. Every year, if you have high medical expenses for Hospital and Doctor visits the Plan puts a cap on your expenses which protects your Retirement Savings.
Medicare Supplement Insurance allows Original Medicare (Part A & B) to pay the initial 80%, and then, after the individual pays the deductible, the supplement insurance pays the remaining 20%. It also has a Maximum out of Pocket. Medicare Supplement Insurance is more expensive than Medicare Advantage, but gives the individual more freedom to use any Medicare Network of Hospitals and Doctors.
Part D is your Prescription Drug benefit run by private companies. It also has an annual cap on expenses.
Medicare Advantage sometimes includes a Prescription Drug benefit as part of the plan. Medicare Supplement never includes a Prescription Drug benefit and must be purchased separately.
